The Science Curriculum at SCL follows the Next Generation Science Standards (or NGSS), a state led set of science standards developed in partnership with the National Research Council (NRC), the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), among others. The NGSS emphasizes three dimensions of effective science learning:
1) Disciplinary Core Ideas, or the key concepts in the four fields of Physical Science, Life Science, Earth and Space Science, and Engineering Design which form the foundation for learning as students progress through the curriculum;
2) Crosscutting Concepts, or the concepts that help students to explore and see connections across the differing fields named above;
3) Science and Engineering Practices, or the intellectual, social, and physical practices involved in scientific inquiry as well as the the practical steps that engineers must take to design and build systems.
